Melaka Polls: Norhizam to lodge police report if parties turn press conferences into ceramah
MELAKA: A police report will be lodged if a political party keeps turning press conferences into ceramah sessions, says independent candidate Norhizam Hassan Baktee (pic). He said press conferences during the Melaka election are meant to disseminate information on candidates, events or manifestos. “Does this mean that we as independent candidates can use the same platform to campaign,” he said when contacted on Saturday (Nov 13).
Norhizam said that he had been alerted by people who had told him that the press conferences are being turned into political talks to insult, demean and sling mud on their rivals. “This is unethical and the relevant agencies should shed some light on whether press conferences can be turned into ceramah sessions,” he said. The candidate for the Pengkalan Batu seat said that he hopes media personnel will leave the press conference if the political party attempts to turn the event into a campaigning session.
“Political party leaders should be able to comprehend the standard operating procedures (SOPs) outlined for the polls,” he said. Earlier, Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said that political parties need not apply for police permits to hold press conferences. However, he said political parties should abide by the SOPs and ensure social distancing during press conferences.
He added any violation of SOPs can be reported to the election monitoring team.
