Home security systems can be expensive. The upfront equipment costs are often substantial, especially if you have a larger home with multiple points of entry and a large area to protect. In addition, many home security professionals recommend a professional monitoring plan, largely because it’s impossible to monitor your own system 24/7 or respond in person to a threat if you’re out of town.

However, monthly monitoring fees can range from £10 to £40 a month or more and comprise a significant expense over time – much more than the original equipment cost. If you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford professional monitoring below is our rating of the Best No Monthly Fee Home Security Systems of 2021.

SimpliSafe: SimpliSafe is relatively affordable and easy to install. There’s a starter package called The Foundation for £229 that includes one base station, one wireless keypad, one entry sensor, and one motion sensor. Two professional monitoring plans are available for £14.99 and £24.99 a month.

Alternatively, you can use SimpliSafe’s app to self-monitor with 30 days of motion-activated camera recordings for £10 a month. If you just want the alarm to sound if the system detects an intruder, there’s no monthly fee at all. Only one camera and a video doorbell are available, so look elsewhere if you want a wider selection of cameras.

But SimpliSafe is an excellent choice for those who want the protection of a high-tech system but don’t want to have to tackle too much technology.

Ring Alarm: Complete systems from Ring start at £199, and monitoring plus cloud-video storage is a relative bargain at just £10 a month. The entry-level Ring Alarm Security Kit includes a base station, a keypad, a motion detector, a door/window sensor, and a wireless range extender. The company has a large selection of security equipment, including a number of popular security cameras and video doorbells.

Because it’s owned by Amazon, Ring’s security system integrates very well with Amazon Alexa, which offers home automation and voice control. In addition, Ring uses the Z-Wave platform, so you can control smart door locks and other devices around your home. You can skip the monthly fee and self-monitor if you wish.

Blue by ADT: Blue by ADT is a DIY system owned by ADT.

It thus has many of the advantages of a professionally installed ADT system, including high-tech equipment and professional monitoring. However, unlike a professionally installed ADT system, there’s no long-term contract. Blue by ADT is controlled with a smartphone app, and complete systems begin at £219.99.

You can also build your own system starting at £179.99; that price gets you a smart hub with a keypad, to which you can add components as needed for £14.99 and up. Three security cameras are available for £199 each, including an indoor camera, an outdoor camera, and a video doorbell. Professional monitoring costs £19.99 a month and features cellular backup, or you can self-monitor for free.

Abode: Abode is a full-featured DIY home security system that doesn’t require a monthly plan.

Complete equipment packages are priced from £229 to £502.99, and there are two monitoring plans for £6 and £20 a month. It’s easy to install and configure the system, as devices come paired to your hub. This means all you need to do is connect them with the app and stick them to your doors, windows, and walls.

Unlike some DIY competitors, Abode integrates with a wide variety of third-party home automation devices.

Do I Need Professional Monitoring?

To avoid a monthly fee for your home security system, you will have to forgo professional monitoring.

Whether this is a good idea depends on your budget and level of risk tolerance. There are at least three reasons to get professional monitoring:

1. A third-party monitoring service is always watching to ensure authorities are notified as quickly as possible, while you might not check an alert on your smartphone right away.

2. Emergency services are more likely to respond to an alarm when it’s reported by a reputable professional monitoring service because there are so many false alarms.

3. A professional monitoring service can alert authorities if you’re not home, asleep, or otherwise can’t be reached.

On the downside, Underwriter Laboratories notes that even a professionally monitored system won’t guarantee a timely response from the authorities, as this also depends on things like weather and staffing.

How To Choose a Home Security System

To choose a no monthly fee home security system, you’ll need to assess your security needs, determine your budget, and plan the installation.

  1. Determine your security needs. Although entry-level systems don’t cost much, they’re also pretty basic, and you might end up needing more equipment.

Examine the number of entry points to your home, and consider other factors such as the crime rate in your area. Most budget systems are designed for the equivalent of a one-bedroom apartment, according to Jordan Frankel of Global Security Experts.

  2. Determine your budget. Although you can self-monitor for free with the systems above, experts agree that paying a monthly fee for monitoring provides more security. If you want the most protection, factor the monthly fee into the overall system cost.
  3. Plan the installation. All of our no monthly fee home security systems allow easy DIY installation and provide step-by-step guides, as well as phone or chat support if you need help.

Check the hours of the company’s support center and whether it offers installation services for more complicated devices like cameras and thermostats.
